Thoughts On

Making The Right Choice

Everyone wants prom to be perfect! And helping you make the right choices on prom night is what we are all about. We asked teens across the country for advice on how to make the right choices on prom night. We have listed a few of the responses below to get started. Now, we want to know your thoughts, many of you have been to prom before, you have a lot of experience and could really help someone else who has a question or needs some advice about his or her first prom.

Q. What general advice do you have on how to have a safe prom?

“Choose the right date, someone you feel comfortable with and can have fun with. Don't drink and don't give in to peer pressure if you find yourself in a bad situation.”
-Jodi, Jodi, Michelle, North Mahaska HS, IA

“Make sure you don't get around people that might pressure you into doing things you don't want to.”
-Heather, Dumas HS, TX

“Have fun and stay with your friends.”
-Tamika, Alchesay HS — 03/23/09

“Let your friends & family in on where you will be going after prom. Set up a secret code you can txt to a friend if the situation starts to get shady and you feel like leaving.”
-Stina, Whitfield Career Academy — 05/03/09

Q. If the situation presented itself, how would you handle drugs or drinking?

“We had a limo and the other couple wanted to bring pot, and we told them if they brought it in the limo, they could get out.”
-Julie, Richmond Hill HS, NY

“It seems like the people who drink don't have as much fun.”
-Leslie, Jay Junior Senior HS, FL

“I would say no I can have fun without harming myself.”
-Alyssa, New Lima HS — 03/11/09

“I would tell them that I wasn't interested in those things, I have life goals, and drugs aren't one of them.”
-Hannah, Huntington HS — 04/03/09

Q. If your date was drinking or drunk, how would you handle it?

“I’d definitely not let him drive or drive me home. I'll get mad at him too.”
-Pamela, Shades Valley HS, AL

“I’d be very upset. When you drink you forget what goes on or what you're doing. What's the point of even going? Why would you want to spend your prom night throwing up anyway?”
-Vanessa, Richmond Hill HS, NY

“I would ask a friend to drive him and me home so he couldnt harm either one of us.”
-Natashia, Portage HS — 04/07/09

Q. What if your date tries to pressure you into doing something you don't want to?

“Tell him a few words then walk off and don't be with him.”
-Kimberly, Wahtonka HS, OR

“Tell him you're not interested, everybody has their own life. Make sure you know who you're going with so you don't have to worry about it.”
-Vanessa, Richmond Hill HS, NY

“Tell him 'No!' If he respects me and my feelings, he won't push.”
-Cindy, Burroughs HS, CA

“That wouldn’t happen but if it did i would definitely refuse and go my own way!”
-Tiffany, Dade County HS — 03/09/09
